Flat Earth Pizzas – Dalston

Flat Earth's seriously delicious vegan and vegetarian pizzas at Dalston's Railway Tavern keeps you wanting more, says Sam Napthine

Pizza may have saved some us during the pandemic, whether it be taking to baking them ourselves or ordering home delivery, but one thing’s for sure, we all love a pizza – especially when you can eat it at a welcoming, cosy pub, with flavour combinations that will leave you wondering, “What was that and when can I have it again?”

That’s what you’ll find with Flat Earth Pizzas, one of London’s only sustainable pizza takeaway restaurants, serving up a mouth-watering vegan and vegetarian menu.

Flat Earth’s founders Sarah and Rich are spearheading an eco-food revolution, following their dream of creating a seasonal food concept. Using UK sourced ingredients from independent suppliers whenever possible, each season brings with it a brand-new set of flavours, introduced to the menu every eight weeks. They don’t send any food waste to landfill; vegetable ends, garlic skins and surplus dough are transformed into new ingredients.

Sustainability is truly at the heart of everything Sarah and Rich do – pickling and fermenting their own preserves, they create Kimchi to tackle what they call, ‘the Hunger Zone’, the time in between January and March when fresh produce can’t be grown in the UK. And when they’re not busy running Flat Earth, they live aboard an East London narrowboat.

Flat Earth Pizza

Flat Earth pizzas were definitely the tonic for our recent wet Saturday afternoon – to start, we chose the three cheese garlic bread, topped with a kick of chilli salsa. Next, the fantastically tangy Kimchi & Cheddar pizza – kimchi on pizza was a brand new experience for me, but the distinct tangy flavour was a winner, perfectly complemented by the beetroot and tomato passata. We opted for the gluten-free base for this pizza, which was pillowy and delicious. My guest praised it as one one of the best gluten-free pizza bases she’d ever eaten

The showstopper pizza was the Blue Cheese, Pear & Walnut, with rich flavour combinations that melt in your mouth. The pear, foraged locally in Hackney, sat perfectly with the soft, delicate notes of the blue cheese.

Miso, aubergine and plum pizza

With my eye already on the Miso, Aubergine & Hackney Plum pizza to try on my next visit, Flat Earth have, for sure, created pizzas that are seasonal, crave-able and magically delicious.

Flat Earth serves dine-in pizzas five days a week or for collection via Flat Earth’s website – or delivery via Deliveroo.
