Crispin – All day & night café in Spitalfields

An all day & night café in Spitalfields, East London – Crispin is not to be missed

crispin east londonThis East London curated cool café/wine bar is housed in a glass pavilion and seats 40 inside and 30 outside. It’s a pretty hub of blonde wood with Pom Pom Factory crafted paper floral table decorations and hanging paper floral branches. We sat inside on a perfect summer lunch time before the hot of the heatwave stole our minds.

We began with Dusty Knuckle bread and brown butter (cultured butter from the Estate Dairy), with the lightest, creamiest and fluffiest burrata that I have ever tasted, which sat in a shallow pool of fruity Capezzana olive oil. Followed by the Trout Crudo with citrus and the aforementioned olive oil. It was perfection – a chilled glass of 2020 Mas De Daumas Gassac Rose from Languedoc paired beautifully.

Next came sharing plates of braised spring lamb, carrot, kefir lime – this was a sublime dish in its savouriness – the carrot puree, intense in flavour yet incredibly light. The pink fir potatoes, confit garlic were so flavoursome and the garlic emulsion (their words not ours) was again a dish of absolute deliciousness and the Austrian Pinot, Jurchitsch matched it perfectly.

Sharing plates usually means that there is always a little bit of room left for two puddings and thank goodness we were able to enjoy the 70% vegan chocolate pot, Capezzena olive oil made an appearance again & rye, producing an absolute winner of a dessert with its smooth texture and very original flavouring. We squeezed in an elevated panna cotta with strawberry, elderflower and black pepper.

Needless to say that the plated dishes looked as good as they tasted and at the helm of the kitchen is chef, Lewis de Haas who previously worked at the Shed in Notting Hill and Petersham Nurseries.

Crispin is open for brunch, lunch and dinner plus home deliveries. There is also a little bit of retail on the side including beautiful wines, oils and vinegars – we made sure we left with a bottle of the Austrian pinot!

The service is great and very helpful, together with excellent and knowledgable wine recommendations.

And if you’re heading west, you’ll find it’s Soho Sister Bar Crispin opening very soon.
