Oslo Hackney

Think about the last time you went to Oslo Hackney. Upstairs, late, loud, Red Stripe? There’s more to this Hackney favourite than that. Head there when the sun’s up for some well-crafted cocktails and the new menu that balances filthy diner influences and old-school British classics with clean eating.

First up – downstairs at Oslo is a big, airy, open space that’s a world away from pulsating nights out. Ideal for brunches with friends – where you can go for the ever-present avo on sourdough, “Eggs Oslo” with spinach and chorizo, or bury a sore head under beer & treacle-cured bacon. Cocktail lovers will find house creations like the Italicus bergamot liqueur-spiked Oslo Spritz alongside classics including the Corpse Reviver #2. Because some hangovers need to drown a delicious death in gin, triple sec, vermouth and absinthe. The cocktails are dotted with bitters, unusual liqueurs, mezcal. You’ll find the same offbeat spirit running through the wine, taps and bottles, which include local brewers Crate and London Fields as well as Oslo’s own lager.

If your mornings are more about bed than brunch, the new menu’s got you covered. A half roast chicken with chorizo & sage stuffing was a knockout, coming with excellent roast potatoes and the true mark of a great roast – a jug of more gravy. The Oslo Burger stacks chuck steak and bone marrow between brioche with Swiss cheese and pickles. Desserts are just as generous and indulgent – think a slab of chocolate Guinness cake with Baileys cream, and G&T jelly with elderflower, lemon and vanilla ice cream. It’s all food meant to be enjoyed and relished, not photographed and picked at.
