Mowcka, who grew up in Buenos Aires and has made East London her home, takes over the hotel’s pan-Asian restaurant UBA with an immersive installation of around 160–200 handcrafted wooden forms, suspended from the ceiling and intertwined with translucent resin petals. The result? A kind of contemporary floating temple – organic, ethereal and made for slowing down and taking it all in.
And there’s something particularly lovely about this partnership being rooted in East London. Mowcka has spent years painting, exploring, dancing, hanging out in parks and discovering East London’s ever-changing street art scene, so this feels less like an art-world takeover and more like a creative conversation between artist and neighbourhood.
There’s also a chance to get inside the ideas behind the installation at Art, Space & Transformation: How Creative Environments Shape Perception and Human Experience, a panel talk at Hart on Tuesday 15 September at 3pm. Hosted around Mowcka’s work, the conversation brings together Mowcka, Hart Shoreditch GM Lina Zakzeckyte, Saira Hospitality’s Greg Fruchtenicht and Shoreditch Street Art Tours’ Dave Stuart to explore how street art, restaurant design and immersive installations can change the way we experience a place – and ourselves.
