My Lockdown Life – Andrea Danelli & Martina Vitali

My Lockdown Life is our interview series discovering how fellow East Londoners are coping with their new normal, what they’re up to and how we can support them at this time.

Since moving to East London from Lombardy in Italy, Andrea and Martina have built their business, One n One together from their respective passions: pizza and fashion. Launching as a pop-up store on Old Street back in 2015, One n One has grown to become a concept store in Spitalfields and an online platform. They’re currently hosting live online masterclasses on how to make sourdough starters, Roman style pizza and artisan bread.

What does your lockdown life look like at the moment?

A&M: We don’t have a specific routine, we organise our day with “to-do” lists taking a few breaks to eat well, workouts or just chill. Once a week we go for food shopping and to our store to collect orders to ship.

A: I started to take orders from our neighbours so I’m actually baking a lot of sourdough pizzas & bread!

What have you found the most challenging about the lockdown?

A& M: We cannot stay with our family in Bergamo! We were supposed to go back to Italy last Easter time but unfortunately this wasn’t possible so we keep in touch everyday on Facetime and we stay positive together.

How has your work and business adapted to lockdown life?

M: We had to completely change our business strategy, adapting very quickly to the online and create new content, especially on Instagram. I’m selecting new brands and uploading them on our website.

A: I’m constantly trying new recipes, doing IGTVs and I’m super excited to teach live “How to Make Pizza and Bread at Home” using Zoom to people just starting to approach the beautiful baking world.

What’s your go-to lockdown meal at the moment?

A & M: Pizza! We keep making new recipes and of course we try them all.

What have you been doing to relax during this time?

M: While Andrea is cooking the main meals, I’m making cakes and pastries and I enjoy sharing them on instagram too. Also I love dancing to relax and keep myself fit mentally and physically.

A: I started meditating in the morning, I wanted to try it for such a long time but I never had the time. I’m very glad I did!

Have you read any interesting books or articles, or watched any great films or TV series you’d recommend?

M: Right now I’m reading The Conscious Closet, which I recommended to anyone starting a sustainable lifestyle. As a TV series I highly recommend The Marvellous Mrs Maisel, it cheers you up bringing you back to the 60’s vibes, beautiful costumes and so much fun. I loved it!

A: I read four books during the first quarantine period and they are all from the same author: Shari Lapena. If you like thrillers check her out.

Have there been any silver linings for you during this period?

A&M: Yes, we discovered how time is important. We started our business in December 2016 and we always ran it by ourselves so apart from holidays we never had so much time to enjoy our home and grow our hobbies.

Will you be making any changes to your life moving forward in a post-lockdown world?

A& M: Yes! We believe everything happens for a reason so we’ll definitely make some changes and we’re planning new projects. Stay tuned.

Any words of wisdom or support for anyone in particular struggling right now?

M: I truly believe that everything happens for a reason, I based all my life on this thought so I keep myself positive thinking about the future and what amazing things could come.

A: I chose this quote from Eleonor Roosevelt With the new day comes new strength and new thoughts.”

How have you stayed engaged with the East London community during this time?

A & M: We’re keeping in touch with our customers and other small businesses like us mainly using Instagram. Right now we’re also delivering our specialities to our neighbours.

Do you have any favourite East London businesses doing great things that you’d like to shout about?

Cuemars is helping us to understand and take care of our plants, and Shoreditch Nails  launched a really cool Nail Art workshop.

Please share any exciting projects you’ve been working on during this time, and how can we support you?

A: We launched our live online classes and I’m very excited to virtually welcome people from all over the world into my kitchen and tell all I know about sourdough starters, pizza and bread!

M: Our shop online is always updated with the latest collections of our selected sustainable brands such as House of Sunny and the beautiful sunglasses of Vow London.

A&M: We’re working on what we love and we share our passions on Instagram so follow us & support us spreading the word.
