food + drink Liverpool Street places to stay

South Place Hotel, Liverpool Street

South Place Hotel is a hidden gem, just a few minutes’ walk from Liverpool Street station. It’s a beautifully themed puzzle with plenty to discover. Influenced by the iconic world of the 1960’s TV show The Avengers (hence the artwork of Rigg). From stylised bowler hats to black umbrellas; from the names of the rooms (Purdy, Steed…) to the pictures on the walls and the Cold War styling. Understated, yet everywhere. There’s a host of meeting rooms with individual styles – we loved the Russian room. There’s also a gym with a spectacular floor- to-ceiling London view. The spa includes steam rooms and saunas, although they’re not unisex, so you might have to sweat it out alone.

The bedrooms are spacious. At the touch of a button the blinds lift in unison to reveal your very own piece of London. The rooms exude tranquillity. In the bathrooms, you’ll find beautifully wrapped soap and a selection of James Heeley toiletries which add to the sense of luxury.  The mini-bar is more of a mini-kitchen – the fridge packed with temptation: craft beers, craft vodka, craft gin, wine, champagne – how does it all fit in?

Book a table for dinner at the hotel’s fine Chop House restaurant – or the Michelin-starred Angler.

South Place Hotel is the product of a beautiful mind. But our enduring memory is of the atmosphere, and that is the product of the friendly, enthusiastic staff. Totally professional. Go there.

Room rates start from £200 a night.
