There’s something quietly magical about the way Ranie Saidi cooks — as though every dish carries a story, a memory, a journey home. The founder of The Malay Cook Supper Club, Saidi is on a mission to bring the warmth and depth of everyday Malaysian Malay cooking to London’s dining scene. His next event — on Sunday 26th October 2025 at My Neighbours the Dumplings in Clapton, East London — promises exactly that: a feast of flavour, nostalgia, and heart.

Saidi’s cooking roots run deep. “I first learned to cook by watching my late grandmother in her kitchen,” he says. “Over the years, cooking has become my way of reliving those moments — a reminder of the joy it brings to me and to the people around me. For me, it’s about togetherness. It’s simple, humble home cooking, but sharing it makes it feel truly meaningful.”

That spirit of sharing infuses every supper he hosts. Expect the kind of food usually reserved for family gatherings in rural Malaysia: crispy fritters with peanut sauce, vibrant orange and lemongrass kerabu, and the centrepiece — Nasi Dagang, a coastal rice dish once eaten by traders at dawn before long sea journeys. Here, it’s paired with Gulai Chicken or Tofu Malay Curry, layered with coconut-steamed rice, pickled pineapple, and a boiled egg. Dessert? A playfully nostalgic Deep-Fried Red Bean Ice Cream with cornflakes and rose syrup.

Saidi’s path to the supper club table wasn’t a straight line. Born and raised in Malaysia, he moved to London to study law — but soon found himself back in the kitchen, first as a café server, then in brand and marketing for some of the city’s top hospitality projects. He’s worked alongside Andi Oliver, Marcus Samuelsson, and Thomasina Miers OBE, and has appeared in the Financial Times, Olive Magazine, and Tasty UK. In 2023, he was a top-six finalist for the Yan-Kit So Award for Asian Food Writers, further cementing his place as one of London’s most exciting emerging voices in food.

Through The Malay Cook, Saidi is creating something larger than a supper club — a bridge between his Malay heritage and his London life. “Food has always been my language,” he says. “It connects me to where I come from, and it brings people together no matter where they are.”
