Dru, your entry into the competition was quite unconventional. Can you tell us how it all started?

I took part in the competition purely as practice for a three-month job in the West End theatre, where I performed as a naked clown. I was booted out of the Dabbers contest early on, so I was surprised when just last night, while I was in bed, half asleep in my underpants, I got the call to come along to the final today.

That’s quite a story! How did you end up competing in the final?

My friend and finalist Lil Wenker was taken poorly and sadly couldn’t make the final, so I stepped in to help out and fill her place at the last moment.

And you went on to win! How does it feel to have secured the victory under such unexpected circumstances?

I really didn’t expect to win, but it’s great – I’ll be employed by Dabbers as a bingo caller for the next year, and I take home prize money of £1,000!

That’s fantastic! You seem very humble about your win.

I think if Lil was here, she would have won. I’m really just here for Lil, and I’ll be sure to share some of the money with her. Maybe I can cut the trophy in half!

Your background is quite varied. How did you transition from breakdancing to becoming a professional clown?

I started out breakdancing with my dad – dancing on the street, then we moved into venues, and later into doing some improv. Now, I’m an actor and professional clown, and I love it.

Your spontaneity seems to be a big part of your success. What advice would you give to others about performing under pressure?

I actually thrive on off-the-cuff, last-minute performances. We all think too much about what’s ahead and stress a lot. I think, if you can just be in the present, connect, and engage with the people around you, it will work out much better. Live in the moment.

Dru is currently performing in Scotland at the Wee Yurt, Venue 243 Potterow @hootscomedy
