The Geffrye Museum, Bethnal Green

The Geffrye Museum may be closed for a £18 million, two-year redevelopment, but that’s not to say you can’t visit one of the recently restored almshouses, with regular guided tours now taking place, offering a rare and fascinating insight into the lives of residents past. The 18th century, Grade I listed buildings were originally constructed by the Ironmonger’s Company in 1714 with money bequeathed by Sir Robert Geffrye, former Master of the Guild and Lord Major of London. For 200 years they provided shelter for the poor and elderly in what was then a peaceful, rural setting and so unlike the vibrant, bustling Kingsland Road of today!
