Stephen Acosta Launches New Show ‘Woman’ at The Book Club

Former underground artist Stephen Acosta has decided to shed his anonymity to launch ‘Woman’, a truly unique new show depicting women of colour through oil portraiture. Acosta’s new exhibition aims to illustrate the injustices he has witnessed on his recent international travels, but didn’t feel he could do this as an anonymous artist. Shrouded in secrecy, the works in this exhibition will not have been previewed before it opens. Acosta hopes that he can use his position to explore why men aren’t engaging with the feminist movement in the arts.

Stephen says: ‘Oil portraits line the halls of everywhere from galleries to universities; and if a woman is featured at all it’s for her beauty. I wanted to explore my own biases and open up a dialogue on the significance of portraiture and how I as a male artist can lend my skillset to exploring these spaces. Even if I get this all wrong it’s opening a dialogue about why more it’s up to women to celebrate women, and why men aren’t engaging with being part of the feminist movement in arts.
