Review – The The Comeback Tour at the Magnificent Troxy

BY SIMON BARKER
Just days since the passing of his father and sixteen years since his last live performance Matt Johnson’s The The played the third and final London leg of the current ‘Comeback Special’ tour at the magnificent Troxy on Thursday.

A sold-out crowd witnessed an emotionally charged set containing songs from across the band’s catalogue, with the backdrop displaying home videos of his family; unsurprisingly the early classics generating the warmest response: Heartland, Uncertain Smile, This Is The Day given added poignancy and the message/warning of The Beaten Generation and Armageddon Days Are Here (Again) remain starkly relevant.

Despite the scarcity of new material and live appearances in recent decades, Matt Johnson’s message has retained its human and political relevance and this, combined with his recent loss leave the hope of a quickening of output.
