London Nights: Absolute Beginners
“That’s entertainment!” So jived David Bowie in Julien Temple’s infamous 1986 musical, which crashed and burned upon its much-hyped release. Yet the notoriously troubled film has been gathering a cult following in the years since its disastrous opening. Adapted from Colin MacInnes’ novel about life in late 1950s London, a suitably otherworldly Bowie stars opposite a young and sultry Patsy Kensit, with James Fox and Mandy-Rice Davis providing support. With racial tensions high in Notting Hill, Kensit and her on-screen beau (Eddie O’Connell) must sing and dance their way out of their inner-city love blues. It’s hardly Shakespeare and maybe that’s the point.
