Property developer Londonewcastle is bringing a new exhibition, A Solar Umbrella, to Whitechapel’s Gallery 46. Bringing together eight established and emerging artists, the exhibition will feature painting, installation, sculpture and drawing. Curated by Katherine Lubar and Asaki Kan with Nick Dawes, the exhibition explores the concepts of transformation and repetition, drawing inspiration from JG Ballard’s A Crystal World, where nature itself and the life forms within it start crystallising. Each artist will respond to the theme in different media: Nick Dawes, for example, will appropriate colour and text from the Highway Code in an expansion of watercolour painting while Shane Bradford will repeatedly submerge objects in emulsion and gloss to transform them into abstracted versions of themselves.
