The Lemon House Theatre is a vibrant, inclusive theatre company run and founded by artistic directors Jennifer Cerys and Samia Djilli. Together they create productions with up and coming writers at St Margarets’s House in Bethnal Green. I went to see Mixed Tape Volume One, the theatre’s first scratch night, to check out a series of staged script-in-hand performances. The room was so packed that additional chairs had to be brought in. All four short plays are written by mixed raced or dual heritage artists, who try to explore their identity. Although the subject matter might sound like a serious one, it was filled with uplifting moments and cheers.
The theatre’s first two full length productions are set for this September. If you’re keen to attend a new play in an unpretentious environment and to see up and coming new talent, I would urge you to go check them out. And arrive early – they also have a lovely garden and café.
