Number 90’s 5th Birthday

BY ELLIOT FULTON

With Crate Brewery currently crowdfunding to build a new brewery and taproom, and Great British Menu star chef Tom Brown opening his much-praised Cornerstone restaurant, as well as West Ham making it their new home, more eyes than ever are on Hackney Wick.

The face of Machaco-the shaman-like mural that spans the front of Number 90, its eyes surveying the industrial landscape and on-going construction in the area. It’s iconic, something you can’t miss and are inevitably drawn to as you walk down Wallis Road. Number 90 has remained resolutely true to itself. Never wavering from its initial vision and values, it continues to embody the area’s creative spirit. Now celebrating it’s 5th Birthday, it remains the destination venue, a place where so many summer days start out with the best intentions of a few canal-side beers with friends and continue until 6am. Local craft beer can quickly turn into Hibiscus Margaritas and Elderflower Pisco Sours, and with a new all-day food menu with small plates like duck confit dirty fries and on-trend burgers like the tasty vegan turmeric and beetroot soy burger, as well as sharing roasts on a Sunday, there isn’t much reason to leave once you’re parked up there.

If that isn’t enough reason to visit, there’s the music too. Escaping the grasps of Hackney Council, Number 90 and the neighbouring converted warehouse spaces Studio 9294 all have late licences. Afternoon beats on the terrace can easily flow into an all-night party at the legendary underground Half Baked events. With monthly residencies from Phonica Records and Late Night Tales, as well as regular slots for London’s best upcoming DJs, it is at the forefront of the London house music scene. Once inside, it’s easy to look past all of the new developments popping up and think you’ve swapped London for Berlin. So whilst the area may be getting a face-lift, beating as strong as ever Number 90 remains a symbol of the Hackney Wick that pulled so many people to the area in the first place.
