East London Artist to Watch

Every once in a while you make an unexpected discovery. Sophie Castle is an artist who's not afraid to let the viewer into some very private places

Having studied at The Royal Drawing School in East London and Central Saint Martins, artist Sophie Castle focuses on the role of the female nude within modern art and how she can eradicate the submissive undertones of the traditional nude. She takes the concept of the female nude and remoulds it from a victimised subject to an exploration of female sexuality and identity. Her drawings are in ink, charcoal and pencil while the paintings are all oils.

Lilith

Sophie’s current paintings are based on the mythical demon Lilith. After quarantine she painted a self portrait, titled ‘Lilith’ representing the trance-like state she felt during Lockdown. She also recently offered up her talents for Portraits for NHS Heroes, set up by artist Tom Croft as a way of saying a small thank you to our frontline workers. Look out for the online exhibition this July.
